Pete and I were good friends at UCLA 1951-53. He helped launch me on my political career when I ran for sophomore class president. As part of the campaign, we drew a group of students to the top of Janss Steps via a trumpet blast at noon. Then, with trumpets blaring, Pete skied down Janss steps with skis he had made. When he got to the first landing, he purposefully fell and lifted the skis to show the undersides. One said, "Skip Byrne" and the other said "Soph Pres." I won the election, due in great part to his involvement. The next year the sophomore class put on its dance on St. Patrick's Day. It was billed as the "Dublin Ball" and, to advertise the event, we organized a "Smiling Irishman" contest. Pete was a member of a non-org group called the "Winos" and entered as Peter O'Goldblatt. He ran a spirited campaign and was elected at the party and crowned the "Smiling Irishman" by Debbie Reynolds, who was the guest entertainer. Pete and I had great times together. Sadly, he transferred to Western Reserve for his upper division and graduation. We kept in touch but it wasn't the same. He was always a good friend and I missed him, as I know Anna Lou and his family do, now. My heart goes out to them. They've lost a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Now he's at peace. Skip Byrne
