I first met Mike in the mid 90's when I was aspiring to become a Supervisor of Special Education/Assistant Principal and was asked to do a demo lesson in his class at PS 122. The next time I met Mike was to work with him at PS 76.
I worked with Mike throughout his tenure at 76. When he first came to us he worked in one of our specialty programs, Operation Return, and when that program was no longer at 76 he remained at 76 and worked with the mainstream school. He was a great guy to work with and the number of children whose lives he touched is great in number. He had a great sense of humor and was wonderful to work with. He was the Mr. "M"of 76 and I was the Mr. "D" of 76. He was one of the lucky few of us who lived close enough to the school that he rode his bike to 76 on numerous occasions. He never had to worry about getting there at the crack of dawn to secure a space on the block.
When the year 2000 began, and we returned from Christmas vacation - I unofficially dubbed that year the year of Mike Mirkovic - MM. He enjoyed me declaring that year in his honor.
I have been retired from 76 for 5 years now but every time I visited the school I would always run into Mike and play catch up. He would always seek me out when we had our annual Flea Market to remind me to save him the gold dollar coins.
Mike, you are going to be greatly missed by all those who knew you, worked with you and loved you.
I pray for the repose of your soul, and I also pray that your family are blessed with strength, courage and peace to get through this very difficult time.
Rest in Peace my friend, you are with God and the Angels now. "Mr "D"
