GLENS FALLS — May 10, 2024, Lois Helen ‘Harvey’ Lattimore passed away peacefully in the Harvey/DeMarsh Family Home where she was Born just 95+ short years ago — March 11, 1929. Lois was able to remain in the family home that she truly loved with the help of her special neighbors. Her son and daughter-in-law were able to visit from Texas for extended help during the last few months of her life.
Lois married Donald Lattimore on September 10, 1949, at the Church of the Messiah in Glens Falls. As a talented seamstress and craftsperson, she designed and constructed all of the gowns for her own wedding, her special sister-in-law, Barbara, as well as many, many other local brides. Throughout the years she was able to give many family and friends quilts, counted cross stitched art pieces, pillows, and many other treasured hand-crafted gifts.
True to her family roots, Lois began a lifelong Genealogy search that resulted in finds for her and many other members of the family. The most notable was the family member that was part of the Mayflower trip (but that unfortunately resulted in a little ‘fistacuffs’ with another passenger before landing in the States). One great find was that she was able to find several half brothers and sister scattered through the country. Dennis and Mary Harvey, Barbara (David) Harvey and David A. Harvey. Her search extended from Ireland, Scotland, and the UK to Canada many dating as far back as the 1200’s. A Journey that will live on with all of the generations that will follow. She always left her special mark be it with Gardens and Plants, her heritage, her friendships or through her family.
As a young family, the best times were when on every weekend, they all would head up to Raquette Lake, Harris Lake and a few other favorite spots in the Adirondack Park for some great camping. Every night, it was off to see the bears at the local dump. Don with his high-powered flashlight and Mom armed with the family camera. It was some of the best family times especially when the bear decided to visit the camp in the middle of the night and one outing in the canoe that turned upside down in a hurry.
Her talents did not stop there, when it came time to build a home for the family, now including a new baby girl, she stepped right up and was instrumental in wiring, plumbing, and constructing their new ranch home on Blue Bird Road in the town of Moreau. Her Love of family shown through when her grandmother’s health failed, and she moved back to the family home to care for her. She was offered a teacher’s aide position at the local Elementary School (Big Cross Street). It was a match made in heaven as she made many, many lifelong friends during her 25 years working with some of the “best teachers around”. The Lunch Bunch group was formed to keep everyone in touch and her students continued to stop by to say hello as she worked tirelessly in all of her incredible flower gardens.
After her retirement, she was able to find a “home away from home” at the Glens Falls Senior Center and was always available for each and every event and fund-raising effort that was needed. Her personal touches could be seen daily at the center as she was always planting beautiful window boxes or bringing in plants to be certain the center was decked out with bright and colorful flowers for everyone to enjoy. She was the leader for many years of the ‘Osteo Busters’ exercise group until she finally gave up the role when the Pandemic kept everyone at home.
Her 90th birthday was a special time for her as the entire family was able to gather in Glens Falls to celebrate. From Alaska, Virginia, Florida, Texas, and Arizona the family celebrated in style at her favorite restaurant.
Lois will be missed by all that had the extreme pleasure to know her. Always willing to pitch in and help with any project, her kindnesses were always returned to her two-fold.
