John Plantier, 77, of Lake Luzerne passed away after a courageous battle with COPD, on March 12, 2025. His daughter Angel and wife Nan were by his side.
John was a tireless worker for causes he deeply believed in. One was the survival of libraries here in the Southern Adirondacks, and particularly the survival of our local Library. For the better part of two decades, John served on the Board of the Library—much of that time as the Library's president. He was also a board member of the Southern Adirondack Library System—a cooperative effort of 34 libraries in four counties of the lower Adirondacks. In both capacities John learned of the precarious financial situation most smaller libraries faced. As president of the Library, John exhibited a unique management style. He performed the traditional functions and duties of presiding over the Board meetings, working with staff, volunteering at Library fundraisers, setting annual budgets and directing Library planning. In addition, he was often “chief cook and bottle washer!” He could be counted on to do routine maintenance, undertaking small as well as large contruction projects—occasionally repairing leaky plumbing, and also building the front lawn structure that holds the Library's signage. He did it all with an offbeat sense of humor that enlivened the experience of the staff. John was the co-founder of the Library book club, one of the longest lasting such clubs in the Adirondacks and one of the few co-ed clubs in the area. It is no exaggeration to say that the continued survival of our Library was largely due to the efforts of John Plantier.
John was always on the go...looking for ways to help others. He gave rides to those without transportation to doctor's appointments, delivered meals on wheels, and, always looking to promote the Library, he would drop off books to those who were home bound.. He was also a volunteer and Board member of the Hadley Luzerne Lions Club and a volunteer with the Lake Luzerne-Hadley Historical Society. In 2019 he was chosen as Senior of the Year by Warren County Office for Aging. A very major love throughout his life was literature and writing. As a dear friend once said, “John is the only person I know who could write a sentence in 3D!” John also loved history. He and his wife Nan created the Lake Luzerne and Hadley Memories Project on Face Book where the memories and life stories of many local people were captured. John was a true people person. He exuded humor, interest, humility, kindness, and empathy to all he met along life's path. His very caring Palliative Care P.A. said of John, “He was a humble man.” He will be very dearly missed."
