Joan R. Whitaker, 89 years young, of Long Lake, New York, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
Joan was born on September 26, 1936, at South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside, New York, to Charles Nelson Whitaker and Dorothy Lulu Whitaker (Doane). She was raised by two loving parents and spent her early years on Long Island, primarily in Bethpage and Bellmore, New York.
Joan pursued some college education along with secretarial school studies. Throughout her early and mid-life, she wore many hats, including teaching nursery school and working at her local library. Above all, however, her greatest passion and most cherished role was being a mother and grandmother.
In her later years, Joan found what she considered her true home in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, settling in the small but beloved town of Long Lake. There, she fully embraced her passion for hospitality. Joan loved meeting people and made a career out of making others feel welcome. She thrived as a hostess and took great pride in supporting those around her—from waitstaff and bartenders to kitchen staff, dishwashers, and bus personnel. This chapter of her life was where she truly flourished.
Joan had a gift for friendship. She loved connecting with people, whether they were lifelong Long Lake residents, summer visitors, or travelers simply passing through town. Her friendships within the Long Lake community became an especially meaningful part of her life. The kindness, energy, and warmth Joan gave so freely to others was returned to her many times over.
She was a strong, fiercely independent, and yes—somewhat stubborn—woman. As one close friend lovingly said, “No one could out-stubborn Joan.”
Joan is survived by her son, Edward Charles Rockstroh; loving daughter-in-law, Katharine (Lydecker) Rockstroh; her granddaughter, Karlee Lydecker Rockstroh; her daughter, Deborah Judith Cotsalas and her husband, Charles; her granddaughter, Rebecca Leahy and her husband, Timothy Penisten; and her great-grandson, Henry.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on July 11. Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Long Lake Cemetery, followed by a gathering at the Adirondack Hotel.
She will be deeply missed by many and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's memory may be made to the Long Lake Rescue Squad.
