Doris Flatt Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and love that we mourn the passing of Doris G. Flatt of Indian Lake NY on April 19, 2025, at age 94.

Doris is survived by her husband James D. Flatt of 73 years; her sons James Flatt and partner Debbie Rothrock of TN; Stephen Flatt and wife Julie (Lemieux) of NC; Gary Flatt and wife Kathy (Laurie) of NJ; grandchildren Ryan Flatt and wife Kelly of NC; Hunter Flatt and husband Michael of NJ; and great-grandsons Jordan and Harvey.

Doris is pre-deceased by a younger brother James Smith; her parents William and Gertrude Smith; and stepfather Robert Bayles.

Doris was born on January 11, 1931 in Dover NJ.  Jim and Doris raised their family in Dover, and on Lake Hopatcong NJ, before moving to Indian Lake.

Doris was very active in the community and supported many charities.  She was Past President of the women’s auxiliary of the William H. Flatt American Legion Post 245 in NJ; Past Matron of Abenaque Chapter 745 Order of the Eastern Star in Long Lake NY; and a lifetime supporter of Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. Doris participated in many Shriner’s activities and fundraisers, prepared food for luncheons and dinners, donated prizes, marched in parades, and attended meetings and conventions throughout the US and Canada.  “Lady Doris” supported her husband Jim as 1999 Potentate, and son Steve as 2004 Potentate, of the Oriental Shriners in Troy NY.

Doris held several jobs throughout her long life, including Metro Supply and Thatcher Glass in NJ, and Tri County Nursing Home in North Creek NY.

“Mom” enjoyed large family get-togethers on the “Flatt Farm” property in NJ.  She enjoyed golf, gardening, sewing, and snowmobiling throughout the Adirondacks.  She cherished visits from family and friends and filled their home with photos.  She was an animal lover, ready with treats for the neighbor’s dogs.

Doris was always well dressed and prepared for company, cooking and baking into her 90’s.  Many fondly remember her canned goods and homemade goodies including banana bread, coffee and carrot cake, apple and lemon merengue pies.

The family is sincerely grateful to all our friends, especially Stanton’s, Don and Linda Haas, Kristen King, Kathy Thomas and Lizzy Chisman, for their kindness and compassion.
