Argyle and Long Lake
Charles F. Simmons, Jr., 61, of Elm St., Argyle, passed away suddenly, Monday September 23, 2025, at his camp in Long Lake.
Born on September 28, 1963, in Falmouth, MA, he was the son of the late Charles and Priscilla (Bestgen) Simmons. He joined the military and attended Schenectady Community College with his GI bill, where he graduated with a focus in Culinary Arts and Baking.
He managed the Bakery of the Brattleboro Grand Union for years, where he worked long hours but still made time for his family. He had odd jobs throughout his life, the Book Press in Keene, New Hampshire, the Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory - his daughters recall some of the spoils of these brief employment stints - a copy of A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh with gold gilded edges and more bags of plain potato chips than anyone could ever eat. Charles was a jack of all trades and finished his career as an entrepreneur. His successful painting business allowed him the freedom to grind at a job for weeks at a time and then take time to spend on his favorite pastimes.
His enjoyments included fishing, yard sales, searching for sea glass, and spending time with his daughters and grandchildren. A pizza connoisseur and devout IPA Lover, he always insisted on having an ice-cold glass with his current favorite brew. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and was known for his great sense of humor, being a prankster and his kind, big heart. He was a masterful bullshitter, especially in Scrabble, where many a foe would lose a turn challenging a word they were certain he made up, only to find it existed with a meaning completely different from his definition. He was also a cutthroat Monopoly player, with his custom painted red car as his designated playing piece.
A gregarious man with a towering presence, his daughters lovingly referred to him as Hurricane Chuck. When he would come to stay, he would always destroy something - a basement sink, an ice maker - and leave a trail of coffee grounds in his wake. He made the best of every situation, had a cheery outlook on life and loved to laugh. Simultaneously the cheapest man to ever live and the most generous.
He is survived by his daughters Brittni (Jeffrey) Liskowacki and Nicole (Eddie Keopraseuth) Simmons; his grandchildren: Michael, Nathan, Adelaide, and Arthur; five sisters: Linda Sotos, Debbie Simmons, Pamela Simmons, Paula Popone, and Donna Piemental; several beloved nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and countless friends. He was predeceased by his grandson Otto.
