Lake Luzerne

Beatrice Evens, 94, of Lake Ave., passed away Sunday evening, February 25, 2018 at Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on February 23, 1924 in Tobyhanna, PA, she was the daughter of the late Raymond L. and Frances (Pope) Gaskill. The family moved to Long Branch, NJ when Bea was a child. She graduated from Long Branch Senior High School in January of 1943.

Following graduation, she worked as a telephone operator for the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company.

In 1945 she came to Lake Luzerne's Rocky Ridge Dude Ranch on vacation where she met her future husband, George A. Evens. They married on July 21, 1946 in Long Branch and settled here.

She then worked at General Telephone Company as well as various other local businesses including Evens Insurance Agency, and Stone's Pharmacy before being employed as Credit Manager in the Business Office of Glens Falls Hospital, retiring in 1989.

Following her retirement, Bea became very active in community service. She had served for many years as the Town Historian, a member of the town's Beautification Committee, local chairman and 25-year member of the executive board of the American Cancer Society, a member of the Hadley Luzerne Lioness and Lions clubs, past president of the William J. Varney American Legion Post Auxiliary, past board member of Luzerne Music Center, the Lake Luzerne Chamber of Commerce, volunteer for the Glens Falls Hospital Guild, the Hadley Luzerne Historical Society as well as the Warren County Historical Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George A. Evens and an infant daughter, Dale Evens.

Survivors include two daughters, Sally Ann Cooney of Delmar, NY, Kathleen R. Evens of Oshkosh, WI; George A. Evens of Lake Luzerne, NY; three grandchildren, Morgan O'Hara of Hoboken, NJ, Margaret O'Hara of Oshkosh, WI and James Cooney of Tampa, FL; one great granddaughter Moira O'Hara.

Friends may call Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Brewer Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Church St., Lake Luzerne.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at Rockwell Falls Presbyterian Church, 7 Bridge St., Lake Luzerne.

Private burial will be in Luzerne Cemetery, Lake Luzerne.
