Lake Luzerne
Richard E. Shiel, 61, of Griffin Rd., passed away Thursday, February 14, 2019 at the place he loved most, his cabin in the woods.
Born on November 21, 1957 he was the son of Robert and Barbara (Kruger) Shiel. He was a graduate of Hadley Luzerne Central School and earned an Associates Degree in Automotive Engineering from Hudson Valley Community College.
For many years Rick worked at Niagara Mohawk starting as a janitor, working his way up to a lineman, natural gas welder, teacher and eventually to management. He later owned and operated Ground Works Utilities in Moreau and was recognized for the Ronald Reagan small business award and invited to the presidents dinner with George W. Bush in 2005.
Rick was an avid outdoorsman and was a licensed trail guide. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and his times in various hunting camps in the area.
He was predeceased by a brother, Mark Shiel.
Survivors include his parents, Robert and Barbara Shiel; his sons: Derrick (Nellie Long) Shiel of Lake Luzerne, Matthew (Cassandra Walczak) Shiel of Glens Falls; Ryan Shiel of Queensbury; his brothers: Robert Shiel, Glenn Shiel and Ronald (Jacqueline) Shiel all of Lake Luzerne; his former wife and mother of his children, Laura Shiel; many Aunts, Uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Brewer Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Church St., Lake Luzerne.
A Memorial Service will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Richard Osborne, pastor of Hadley Luzerne Wesleyan Church, officiating.
