Indian Lake

Joseph M. King, 85, of Big Brook Road, passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 3, 2018 at his home following a battle with cancer.

Born on September 14, 1933 in Indian Lake, he was the son of the late Lester P. and Lois (Hutchins) King.  He attended Indian Lake Central School and was a lifelong resident of Indian Lake.

Joe had been employed by the Town of Indian Lake Highway Department for 16 years and served as Highway Superintendent prior to working as a heavy equipment operator for NYSDOT for 17 years.  He retired in 1989.  Following “retirement”, Joe enjoyed being caretaker for several area camps.

He enjoyed cutting wood and processing it at the sawmill, his tractor “Wiley”, hunting, fishing and working as a hunting guide.  He enjoyed coaching little league for many years.  

Joe was a member of the Last Resort Club in Grampus Lake and a dedicated member of the Indian Lake United Methodist Church having served on the board of trustees as well as the parsonage committee.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Joan (Benton) King who died on October 17, 1974; his longtime companion, Joan Petty, who died on September 21, 2011; a son, Richard Mueller; a daughter, Lena J. King; his brothers: Vivan King, Beecher King, Floyd King; sisters: Frances DeMarsh, Agnes King and Violet Brooks; his beloved dog, King.

Survivors include his children: Michael King of Indian Lake, Patti (George) Panayotidis of Nyack, NY, Kevin (Beth) King of Indian Lake, Kelley (Maurice) Gionet of Alexandria Bay, Phil Mueller of Saranac Lake, Joe (Nicole) Mueller of Clarkson, MI; 15 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; one sister, Mary Jane Blanchard of Speculator; daughters-in-law, Debbie Mueller of Saranac Lake and Joanne Gray of Indian Lake; brother-in-law, Morris Durking of Indian Lake; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, 6357 NYS Rte. 30, Indian Lake.

A memorial service will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Nina Dickinson, pastor of the Indian Lake United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Cedar River Cemetery, Indian Lake.
