My heartfelt condolences to the children and grandchildren of the Hanlon family. Coach Hanlon (Joe) has a very special place in my life and I was truly saddened to learn of his passing.  Joe was not only my JV Basketball coach and Baseball coach but he and Coach Doherty were amazing role models for me and both of their recommendations helped me secure my first teaching and coaching position in the NY State system (Hague Central School).  When I was a high school senior Coach Hanlon took me on a field trip to his Springfield College on his own time and money to try to influence me to become a teacher and coach and attend his college.  I didn't attend Springfield but this trip truly helped define my life direction.  When I became a High School basketball coach Joe would host me and my teams for scrimmages which were very helpful toward the great successes my teams would experience during the mid-70's.  Joe was my mentor but more..we became very good friends.  When I was in high school, I honestly felt like part of Joe and Naomi's family...they were both incredibly kind and caring to me.  Joe's parents were amazing with me as well...I have fond memories of Joe Sr. and Marion (of course, I knew them as Mr, and Mrs. Hanlon) at Bend of the River golf course...I always felt at home in the presence of the Hanlon family.  I have lived in Atlanta for over 33 years and this year is my 50th class reunion at HLCS.  I am attending my first...and had every intention of visiting Coach Hanlon during my stay in Luzerne the 1st of June...I am heartbroken that I missed this time to see my friend...I was so looking forward to reminiscing and enjoying some time together.  Joe will never be forgotten...it was my privilege and blessing to have his influence in my life.  My prayers are with the Hanlon family at this difficult time.

Joe Hanlon was a special friend to me and my family and hunting companion. He coached me in high school I looked up to and respected him. He became more of a coach but a great friend. He was a Very close friend to my dad and would always remind me how I looked like him and made him laugh. I always loved running into him in town or at the basketball games and this I will truly miss. My deepest condolences to his family.

What a great man Joe was especially as a coach and teacher. He had a heart of gold and I fondly remember his bear hugs. I was so lucky to run into him with my brother this past December and we were able to reminisce a bit, and of course he gave me a big bear hug. Joe will always have a special place in my heart. Betty Jean, Patti and boys, my healing prayers and thoughts are with you. May the wonderful memories of him comfort you. With my heartfelt condolences, Donna

For Joe's family:Please accept our condolences on Joe's passing. I'll never forget our times together in the HLCS band. Our circles together were the band and Dude Ranch Trail in the summers. Once we had a little pick up band that participated in a talent contest in Glens Falls at the Rialto Theater. We should have won. We will miss our visits when we returned to Luzerne from time to time. Rest peaceful, old friend. Sincerely, Bob & Barbara Palmer
