John Shattuck

One of the all-time great characters, "Big John" R.D. Shattuck passed on to the Happy Hunting Ground on Thursday morning surrounded by is family and close friends.
John Shattuck, 80, of West Maple St. Corinth, formerly of First Ave, Hadley, died Thursday morning, May 10, 2018 at Glens Falls Hospital.

Born on April 23, 1938 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late Allan McIntosh Shattuck and Nancy (Shepardson) Shattuck. He moved to the Adirondacks in the mid 1960's.

John was well known as the "ultimate picker" long before it was a popular profession now being followed on national TV. He was antique dealer in many area antique emporiums, an auctioneer with a certain style of his own, and a firearms dealer at guns shows across the state.

He enjoyed "treasure hunting", always in it for the thrill of the hunt and that one big score. He loved reading Clive Cussler novels & watching old movies. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing & trapping often bringing home his bounty to cook for family and friends.


He also was known to attend almost every auction and estate sale around & who was known to have a reserved front row seat at many of the auction galleries. He loved good food as long as it was cooked right. He will be remembered in many ways, from a beloved father & grandfather, a dear loyal friend, a "character" truly all his own. He will be remembered for his sly wit and silly sense of humor and most certainly for being a ladies man. He loved the ladies and was known as a quite a charmer.

John was a Lifetime Member of the National Rifle Association, Director of Mid States Arms, Life Member of New England Arms Collectors Association, and a member of the NYS Arms Collectors Association.

He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Irene McCartney.

Survivors include his children, Jeannie Russell and her husband Gregory of Diamond Point, John Brian Shattuck and his wife Shannon of Port Orchard, WA, Jeffrey Shattuck of Lake Luzerne; three grandchildren, Robert N. Shattuck, Mason G. Shattuck, Jason D. Shattuck; one great granddaughter. In addition, he is survived by his special friend& care giver Wendy Young.

In keeping with John's wishes, there are no public calling hours scheduled.

John's family is asking for friends to come together to share some classic John Shattuck stories, memories of his life and enjoy some light refreshments, Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at the William J. Varney American Legion Post 862, Lake Luzerne.

John and his family would like to thank Dr. Giatti-Grubbs and the staff at the CR Wood Cancer Center. You have been wonderfully kind and compassionate to us and he really loved you just like family. There are many fond memories of the hugs and well wishes that made gave him a beaming smile. As odd as it sounds, his visits to see you all was a social highlight for him that he often looked forward to.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations in Big John's memory to the CR Wood Cancer Treatment Center and the National Audubon Society
