George “Hap” Georges
Devoted family man, Hap Georges, age 85, died peacefully in his Long Island home on December 9, 2023. Hap was a determined cancer survivor many times over, and finally succumbed to the disease surrounded by his family.
A leader in municipal and retail banking, Hap Georges retired from the Bank of America in 2004 as the New York Market Manager and Senior Vice President of Municipal Banking, responsible for all of New York State’s municipal banking. Because of Hap’s steadfast loyalty and a series of bank mergers, he spent over three decades of his career at the same institution: Nat West, Fleet Boston and eventually, Bank of America.
Disciplined and civic-minded, Hap Georges was a Marine Reservist and served his community on the Board of Directors of the Suffolk County Boy Scouts of America, the Long Island Coalition for Fair Broadcasting, the Long Island Blood Drive, and the Municipal Finance Committee of the NY Bankers Association. He was Chairman of the Long Island Philharmonic and Henry Viscardi High School. In 1986, Hap received the “Long Island Distinguished Leadership Award” from Long Island Business as well as the “Good Scout Award” from the Suffolk Council of Boy Scouts of America in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the economic and cultural betterment of Long Island, and his illustrious service toward boy scouting and underserved youth.
As a graduate of Villanova University, Hap was a lifelong, die-hard fan of Villanova basketball. He was also an avid golfer and competitive tennis player, winning the Equitable Father-Son National Championship with his son Bill at the US Tennis Open in 1983. Hap spent summers (and more in retirement) lakeside in the Adirondacks, tending to his boats and his list of daily chores. At the end of every day, Hap could be found in his chair on the dock, delighting in stories and a well-deserved sunsetwith Phyllis, family and friends.
Hap will be remembered for his natural curiosity and ability to connect with anyone, for his excellent cocktails, and his earnest, jolly nature. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Phyllis Georges (née Heldmann), his son William “Bill” Georges, daughter-in-law Kristina Georges, son-in-law Bryan Weiss and wife Jamie Andrews, and his five grandchildren: Allie, Maddie and Christopher Weiss, Kozmo and Harry Georges. Hap is reunited in heaven with his beautiful daughter Kathy Weiss, as well as several Golden Retrievers.
